Kuten luvattu: neulontaa! Tämä ihastuttava muunnos Zimmermanin February Baby Sweaterista oli pakko saada puikoille heti, kun näin ohjeen Flint Knits:ssa. Itse neulonta kesti noin pari viikkoa muutamine purkamisineen. Ohje oli ihastuttavan yksinkertainen neuloa, ja suurin osa purkamisesta olikin langan riiton optimointia (oli pakko käyttää joka ikinen metri tätä ihanuutta).

As promised: knitting content! This lovely sweater based on Zimmerman’s classic February Baby Sweater jumped on the needles as soon as I spotted the pattern on Flint Knits. The knitting took about two weeks with a couple of rips and re-knits. The pattern was a breeze to knit and mostly the ripping was due to optimizing my yarn usage since I just had to use up every last yard of this gorgeous yarn.

Malli on jotenkin ihan minua ja istuu hyvin päälle. Juuri sopiva neule heitettäväksi kesävaatteiden päälle, jos meinaa tulla viileä ja eikun iltalenkille! Ylhäältä alas raglan- malli oli helppo sovittaa omalle kropalle sopivaksi (tein itsekin yläosasta himpan pidemmän kuin ohjeessa) ja hyvin laskeutuvan langan kanssa pienet koko heitot peittyi helposti. Mitäpä tässä muuta sanomaan kuin: Mahtava! Neulokaa tämä, heti!

This sweater is so me. I love how it fits and feels. It’s just the right thing for those cooler summer nights. I can jsimply throw it on and be ready for my evening walk with Mister. The top-down raglan construction is really easy to modify to fit your body (I made the yoke a smidge longer than in the pattern) and with a drapey yarn those little changes in width were easily concealed. What else can say than: Awesome! Go knit this, right now!

Laiska bloggaaja – Lazy Blogger

Onhan tässä taas vierähtänyt aikaa viime postauksesta. Ihan ensimmäiseksi täytyy kiittää kaikkia ihanista Tilted Duster- kommenteista. Tällä kertaa en ole kerennyt vastaamaan moneenkaan henkilökohtaisesti, mutta haluan sanoa, että niistä jokainen on moneen kertaan luettu ja paljon arvostettu. Kiitos!

It’s been awhile since I last posted and the first business of the day is to thank you all for the lovely comments on the Tilted Duster. This time around I haven’t had the time to answer everyone personally so I’d like to thank all of you collectively. I’ve read (and re-read) every comment and I appreciate them all. Thank you!

Ja vaikka olenkin ollut laiska bloggaaja ja vielä laiskempi s-postin kirjoittelija, en suinkaan ole ollut laiska neuloja. Tilted Dusterin jälkeen on nimittäin syntynyt jo seuraava villatakki! Buttony pääsi puikoille koko neulejonon ohi, sillä syyskuun alun käsityömessuilta löytyi niin täydellinen lanka kuin napitkin tähän projektiin.

And even though I’ve been a lazy blogger and a lazy e-mail correspondent to boot, I have not been a lazy knitter. Since the Tilted Duster I’ve already started and finished my next big project! Buttony leaped to my needles past all other projects because I found both the perfect yarn and the perfect buttons for this project from the local crafts fair a few weeks back.

Malli/Pattern: Buttony
Lanka/Yarn: Araucania Nature Wool, 350g
Puikot/Needles: 5mm

Muutokset: Buttonyn ohje on enemmänkin resepti ylhäältä alas neulotulle villatakille kuin tarkka neuleohje. Niinpä seurasin ohjetta hyvin vapaasti ja ainut mitä alkuperäisestä ohjeesta jäi käteen (siis upean idean lisäksi, huom!) oli aloitus silmukkamäärät.

Modifications: The pattern for Buttony is more a recipe for a top-down raglan than a full-blown cardigan pattern. In the spirit of the pattern I did a lot of modifications and basically the only thing I used (aside from the awesome basic idea!) from the pattern was the amount of stitches cast on.

Buttony oli ihanan suoraviivainen neule, jonka kanssa ei turhia tarvinnut laskeskella, käännellä tai väännellä. Paitaa silloin tällöin sovittamalla löytyi helposti oikea koko ja muoto. Nature Wool oli lankana uusi tuttavuus ja toivon todella, että paita kestää käyttöä, sillä tätä lankaa tekisi mieli ostaa heti lisää. Neuloin paidan kroppaosan kahdelta eri kerältä välttääkseni ongelmat käsinvärjätyn langan kanssa, mutta loppujen lopuksi hihat tuli neulottua vain yhdeltä kerältä eikä mitään ongelmia ilmaantunut. Nature wool ei ole pehmeintä mahdollista villaa, mutta toisen paidan päällä Buttony on ihanan lämmin lisä syysvaatteisiini, jota tulee varmasti käytetty usein.

Buttony was a great, straight up, no-nonsense knit. No calculations, mind-blowing charts or tricky bits necessary. I could easily get the right size and shape by simply trying the thing on every once in awhile. And I can’t say enough good things about the yarn. I’ve never used Nature Wool before, so I really hope that it will wear well so I can go out and buy some more! I knitted the body with two different balls of yarn to prevent any problems with the hand-painted yarn but in the end I knitted the sleeves with only one ball without any problems. I’ll have to warn you though, Nature Wool is not the most softest yarn in the world. But since I wear all my handknits on top of another shirt that’s not a problem for me. All in all, Buttony is a great addition to my Fall wardrobe and I’m sure I’ll wear it often and well.

Tilted Red Duster

Lanka/Yarn: Rowanspun Aran, Gables. 400 g
Puikot/Needles: 6 mm
Napit/Buttons:Käsintehdyt lasinapit Sockapalooza4- ystävältä. / Hand-made glass buttons from my Sockapalooza4- pal.

Muutokset: Suurin muutos malliin oli empire- vyötärön pienentäminen paremmin sopivaksi. Tarkemmat tiedot aiemmassa blogauksessa. Hihojen (ja sen myötä koko hihat) resorit ovat tuuman pidemmät kuin ohjeessa ja helmaan on lisätty n. parin sentin verran 2o 2n- neuletta. Olen ennenkin tainnut mainita, etten erityisemmin pidä itsestään rullaantuvista sileä-neule reunoista.

Modifications: The greatest change to the pattern were the modifications to the empire-waist to make it more close-fitting. More details here. I also added an inch to the ribbing in the sleeves and another inch of k2 p2- ribbing to the skirt hem. I think I’ve mentioned before that I really don’t like the rolled-up stockinette edge.

Empire- linjoja – Empire- style

Syksyn IK kolahti postiluukusta viime viikolla ja lehdestä kolahti erityisesti Norah Gaughanin Tilted Duster. Takki on kuin tehty Suomen syksyyn muiden vaatteiden päälle heitettäväksi. Olen aina ollut ihastunut empire- tyylisiin vaatteisiin, sillä ne useimmiten näyttävät hyvältä myös minun vähemmän rintavalla kropallani. Ainoana muttana mallissa oli tämä kuva takin selästä. Empire- linja on hyvin väljä, ja sehän ei minulle käynyt.

The Fall IK arrived in Finland last week. One of the most appealing patterns in it was Norah Gaughan’s Tilted Duster. It’s perfect for the Finnish Fall when you just need something extra to throw on when you go outside. And I’ve always loved empire- waists since they make even those of us who are less well-endowed look good. The only problem I had with the pattern was in this picture. The empire-waist is obviously very loose and I couldn’t be having with that.

Eipä auttanut muu kuin käydä modaamaan tuota takin yläosaa. Pikkutarkkojen mittausten ja laskelmien päätteeksi aloitin n. 3 tuumaa (12 s) kapeammalla takaosalla ja lisäsin mallin mukaisiin mittoihin ennen hihansuiden alkua. Lisäykset tein n. kolmanneksen päästä reunoista lisää 1n,1o, lisää 1,n- malliin joka 8. kerros. Lisäyksissä yritin saada aikaan samanlaiset pystysuorat saumat kuin mitä usein näkee empire-tyylisten mekkojen laskostetuissa selissä.

There was nothing else to do except get out the old pen and paper and start modifying the pattern. After careful measurements and some knitty math I started out with 3″ less worth of stitches (12 s to be exact) at the back and increased to the pattern’s stated amount before the armhole- decreases. The increases were done with inc 1 purl, k1, inc 1 purl- pattern every 8. row. With the increases I tried to imitate the straight edged pleats that you can see at the back of some empire- style dresses.

Etu- ja takakappaleet ovat nyt valmiina, ja näin alustavasti olen hyvin tyytyväinen tulokseen. Kuvia en kuitenkaan voi tarjoilla, sillä kuvan ottaminen omasta selästä yksin on liian hankalaa ainakin minulle. Kuvamateriaalia sitten valmiista takista.

Fronts and back are now done and I’m pretty happy with the fit. I can’t really show you any pictures since I have realized that I am unable to take decent pictures of my own back no matter what I do. So pictures when the Duster is finished.

Parka

Malli/Pattern: Parka, Kim Hargreaves, Rowan 34
Lanka/Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky, 1000 g
Puikot/Needles: 7mm/8mm.
Napit/Buttons: Itse tehdyt, katajaa. / Made by me, juniper.

Muutokset: Taskujen läpät helmineuletta joustinneuleen sijaan. Halusin lisätä takkiin hieman tekstuuria, ettei sileä neule tuntuisi niin tylsältä. Neuleen kaulus on pienempi kuin ohjeessa, sillä lanka alkoi loppua tässä vaiheessa. Viimeistelyvaiheessa otin neuletta hieman sivuilta sisään, sillä neule oli selvästi suunniteltu hieman rintavammalle naiselle kuin minä. Sisään ottaminen ei kuitenkaan ollut mikään ongelma, sillä takki oli muutenkin jo sen verran kookas, ettei sisään otettua osaa tarvinnut leikata irti vaan sen pystyi helposti jättämään neuleen sisään ilman suurempia möykkyilyjä.

Modifications: I knit the pocket flaps in moss stitch instead of ribbing since I wanted to add some texture to the stockinette cardigan to make it a bit more interesting. The collar is smaller than in the pattern since I was running out of yarn at that point. Additionally, I had to take in the cardigan a bit at the sides when I was sewing the pieces together. The pattern was obviously written for someone who’s got a bit more going on in the chest department than I do. But since the cardigan is very bulky to begin with it, it was no problem to leave the taken in parts inside the cardigan without cutting them off.

Tämä neule oli todellinen pakkomielle neule. Neuloin koko takin viikossa ja käytin pari päivää nappien tekemiseen ja ompelemiseen. En ole koskaan ennen neulonut mitään näin nopeasti. Tietenkin 8 mm puikot auttoivat, ja pelko langan loppumisesta motivoi myös. Loppujen lopuksi lankaa taisi jäädä n. 15 cm pätkä. Purin myös tekemäni mallitilkun, että sain taskujen läpät neulottua.This was a total obsessive knit. I knit the whole cardigan in a week and then spent a couple of days making the buttons and sewing. I’ve never knit anything so fast in my life. Of course, the 8 mm needles helped a lot and the fear of running out of yarn was a great motivator. In the end I had approximately 15 cm worth of yarn left and I even had to rip the swatch in order to finish the pocket flaps.

Syy miksi tein tällaisen talvi/syys neuleen kesän korvilla, on hieman epämääräinen. Lähiaikoina olen tuntenut oloni hieman alakuloiseksi ja päämäärättömäksi. Oikeastaan mitään ei ole elämässäni vialla, mutta alakuloisuus on silti vienyt voimiani. Niinpä tunsin vetoa isoon, pehmeään ja turvallisen tuntuiseen neuleeseen, johon voisin kääriytyä. Ja sellainen Parka todella on. Se on kuin ystävän halaus, jonka voi pukea päälleen.

The reason why I knitted such winter/autumn piece this close to Summer is that I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather lately. I really have no particular reason why I’m feeling this way but it’s been stealing my energy. So I felt really drawn to a large, warm and comforting sweater that I could wrap around myself. And the Parka performs this function perfectly. It’s like a hug from a big comforting friend that you can wear whenever you like.

Edit: Jotkut teistä kyselivät katajanappien alkuperää, sillä katajahan on osaksi suojeltu Suomessa (HUOM! Ei saa kerätä kaupallisiin tarkoituksiin). Nappien kataja on kerätty viime kesänä kuolleista puista. Ilmeisesti jokin ötökkä oli tappanut useamman katajan, sillä noissa minunkin napeissani näkyy “ötökän polkuja” eli tunneleita, joissa puuaines on haurastunut. Yksi tällainen tunneli näkyy hyvin puukkokuvan napissa siellä kauimmaisessa reunassa.

Edit: Someone asked about the legality of using juniper for the buttons. It is a partially protected species in Finland; meaning you can’t use it for commercial purposes.

Enid Cardigan

Malli/Pattern: Enid Cardigan by Veronik Avery, Interweave Knits winter 2006
Lanka/Yarn: Drops Alpaca, 300 g
Puikot/Needles: 3&3,5 mm Addi + DPNs.

Muutokset: Tein takista huomattavasti pidemmän kuin mallissa, sillä en pidä lyhyistä paidoista, jotka paljastavat puoli selkää istuessani tai kumartuessani. Loppujen lopuksi pidensin sitä vielä jälkeenpäin helmasta muutaman sentin, koska se tuntui sovittaessa hieman lyhyeltä ja silmukat oli jätetty valmiiksi neulottaviksi jo luotaessa tuota käännettyä huolittelua varten. Lisäsin kontrasti huolittelut myös hihansuihin, sillä en erityisemmin tykkää jättää sileää neuletta rullaantumaan vapaasti kuten alkuperäisessä mallissa. Pidän enemmän huolitellun näköisistä reunoista tai resoreista.

Modifications: I made the cardigan a lot longer than required in the pattern. I prefer clothing that doesn’t ride up my back everytime I have to sit down or pick something up. I ended up lengthening the cardigan about an inch in the very end since it seemed a bit short when I was trying it on and I already had live stitches at the hem for the contrast lining. I also added the contrast lining to the cuffs since I don’t like the “devil may care” rolled up stockinette stitch that the original pattern featured. I tend to prefer a more neat, finished look.

Kokonaisuudessaan takki onnistui mielestäni erittäin hyvin. Se istuu kauniisti olematta kuitenkaan mikään makkaran kuori. Ja vetoketju on niin kätevä! Grumperinan ohjeiden avulla sain siitä juuri sopivan. Ei enää rumia nappilistoja! Drops alpaca laskeutuu muutenkin kauniisti ja on erittäin kevyt päällä. Lämminhän tämä takki tulee olemaan, mutta suunnittelinkin sen pidettäväksi töissä, jossa on erittäin tehokas ilmastointi. Olen erityisen tyytyväinen uuden steek- tekniikan oppimiseen, sillä takki oli todella helppo ja mukava neuloa kokonaan pyörönä.

All in all, I’m very happy with this cardigan. It fits well without being too tight, and the zipper was a wonderful addition. With Grumperina’s instructions I got it to fit perfectly, no more gaping buttonbands for me! Drops Alpaca has a beautiful drape to it and the yarn is also very light to wear even though I know from experience that it is also very warm. That’s okay though, since I planned this cardigan to be worn at work where we have very efficient air conditioning. I’m especially glad that I learned the steek technique, since it was so easy and fun to knit the whole cardigan in the round.

Rambling Rose cardigan

Puikot/Needles: 4 mm Addi

Villatakki tuli vihdoin valmiiksi. Itse asiassa se valmistui jo lauantaina, mutta bloggaus on jäänyt tähän päivään, sillä Hauva sairastui sunnuntaina vatsatautiin ja toipilasta on pitänyt hoivata koko päivä (ja yö *haukotus*). Onneksi tänään Hauva oli jo parempivointinen.

The cardigan is finally ready. Actually it was ready on Saturday but the blogging had to wait until today, since our Doggie got sick on Sunday (he’s got a stomach flu) and I had to take care of him all day (and night *yawn*). Luckily he was feeling a bit better today.

Takista tuli omasta mielestäni oikein onnistunut: ainoastaan nappilistat eivät asetu oikein paikoilleen. Mietin hetken nappien vaihtamista vetoketjuun, mutta nekin tuottavat toisinaan ongelmia. Myös nappilistojen ompeleminen kiinni kävi mielessä, mutta tällä hetkellä saa tuunaukset jäädä hautumaan. Takki on kuitenkin pidettävässä kunnossa, ja tälläkin hetkellä päällä.

I think that the cardigan was a success, the only problem are the buttonbands that don’t seem to behave properly (bulging a bit). I thought about exchanging the buttons for a zipper, but there are some problems with that as well. I also toyed with the idea of sewing the buttonbands together. But for now, I’m leaving it be, since I rather like to wear the cardigan already (I’m wearing it right now).
